The Delavan-Darien High School juniors and seniors experienced a powerful and emotional lesson in the dangers of impaired and distracted driving during a Mock Crash Simulation held on Thursday, May 7, just days before Prom 2026.
The simulation, part of the district’s every-other-year safety programming, was designed to provide students with a realistic look at the devastating consequences that can result from dangerous driving decisions. The event focused on the risks associated with drinking and driving, distracted driving, speeding, and failing to wear seatbelts.
The demonstration featured student and staff participants portraying crash victims, real crashed vehicles from alcohol-related incidents, and a live emergency response from local police, fire, EMS, towing, and medical personnel. Students observed firsthand how first responders react in emergency situations and the lasting impact these tragedies can have on families, friends, schools, and entire communities. Emergency responders demonstrated their rescue efforts as part of the exercise, including extricating injured passengers from wrecked vehicles, performing emergency medical procedures, and showcasing the coordinated response that takes place during a serious crash.
“As students prepare for prom, graduation, and the many celebrations that come with the end of the school year, we want this event to serve as a powerful reminder about the importance of making safe and responsible choices,” said Ashley Duchemin, Marketing & Community Engagement Director and DDHS Prom Advisor. “Our hope is that students walk away understanding that one poor decision can change lives forever. We want every student to enjoy these milestone moments, make smart decisions, and make it home safely to their families.”
The simulation was coordinated by Duchemin and Delavan-Darien School District School Resource Officer Michael Anderberg in partnership with several local agencies and community organizations, including the City of Delavan Police Department, City of Delavan Fire Department, Purcell’s Towing, MD1, and Monroe Funeral Home.
“Our goal is to provide students with a real-world perspective before they head into prom weekend and summer celebrations,” said Officer Michael Anderberg, DDSD School Resource Officer. “Students often hear about the dangers of impaired or distracted driving, but seeing how quickly a situation can escalate helps reinforce the importance of making responsible choices.”
“This mock crash is a key part of our ongoing efforts to educate our students about safety and responsibility,” said Jim Karedes, Principal of Delavan-Darien High School. “We are incredibly grateful for the collaboration and support from our local police, fire, EMS, and community partners who helped bring this important learning experience to life. Our hope is that students leave with a deeper understanding of how one decision can impact not only themselves, but their families, friends, and the entire community.”
The simulation also showcased the strong and valued partnerships between the Delavan-Darien School District and local emergency responders, businesses, and community organizations. By working together, these community partners continue to play an important role in supporting student safety, education, and real-world learning experiences that leave a lasting impact far beyond the classroom.
School administrators and local emergency responders believe the simulation delivers a powerful and lasting message to students as they head into prom, graduation, and other upcoming celebrations, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead, making smart choices, and never getting behind the wheel impaired, distracted, or under the influence.
