Course Information:

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Students will gain knowledge through classroom lessons and hands-on practice. Upon completion of required skills and receiving 80% or better on written tests, students will become certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard

Outcomes:

  • Describe characteristics and responsibilities of a professional lifeguard, ensuring facility safety in all circumstances

  • Identify aquatic emergencies and demonstrate how to appropriately respond

  • Apply knowledge through appropriately performing lifesaving skills and techniques both in and out of the water, according to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED standards.

  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to communicate effectively, encouraging and supporting classmates throughout all course activities.

  • Demonstrate leadership qualities in problem solving situations

Prerequisites:

PE500 – Physical Education 9

Swimming Skills:

  • Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

  • Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.

  • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only legs.

  • Complete a timed event involving approach, retrieval and return of a 10 lb object submerged in (minimum) 7 feet of water
