TE161 Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) TC

This is a year long course that requires selection of both semesters: S1 and S2. Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) is a transcripted yearlong course that Project Lead The Way designed for 9th through 12th grade students. The major focus of IED is the design process and its application. Through hands-on projects, students apply engineering standards and document their course work. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems, document their work using an engineer's notebook, and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community. Students are able to obtain college credit based on their performance on the end of year assessment.

Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate the ability to write a design brief for a project, listing its constraints, target audience and purpose
  • Analyze the different methods of technical sketching
  • Compare and contrast Isometric, orthographic, oblique, cabinet, cavalier, one, two and three point perspective sketches and be able to identify the application for each
  • Organize and document learning process by creating and keeping an engineering notebook
  • Identify basic functions and commands in the Inventor software needed to create basic practice shapes
  • Comprehend the importance of the design process, methods of sketching and inventor modeling by creating the puzzle cube project
  • Produce basic to advanced assemblies with the inventor program, understand and be able to describe to others how they created each part of the assembly
  • Apply terminology associated with 3D drafting and design part creation and assembly
  • Utilize math and science skills and practices in assignments geared toward a design application
