INSIDE LOOK: 4K Parent Outreach Events

Today (Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017) was a great day to be a preschooler in the Delavan-Darien School District!

You got to have a field trip and share in the fun with your teachers, your friends and your parents!

It might not have been a good day, though, if you were a frog living in Darien’s Wildwood Park.

That’s where our 4K students, their parents and teachers met for a scavenger hunt. The event was part of a parent-school outreach program. Once a month, the district provides school-day programming for students and parents to take part in, together.

Why do we do them?

“We want families to be involved with our students, and it’s part of our curriculum,” said Ms. Liz Calhoun, a 4K Dual Language Teacher. “We have to invite parents and we love to have parents involved with their students.”

Today’s scavenger hunt was a science lesson in nature. Students and their parents had to find any number of items, from pinecones and leaves to footprints and feathers.

And of course, the students found their fair share of frogs, too.

The parent outreach events are held on the third Wednesday of each month throughout the school year.

Other planned events for the 2017-18 school year include movement and physical activities, strategies to calm your child, a math day, a trip to Aram Public Library, Raising a Healthy and Active Child and more.

The end of the year will conclude with a picnic and an introduction to the district’s bookmobile!
