Technology in their hands

At the start of the 2013-14, the district launched a 1:1 (one-to-one) technology initiative paring a personal computing device with each student — iPad Mini tablets for 4-year-old kindergarten students through first graders and Google Chromebooks for students in grades 2 through 12.

Each device is web-enabled anywhere in our buildings, giving each student instant access to the vast power of the internet anywhere they are in any of our school buildings. For the older kids who will get to take the devices home, they’ll have the same filtered and secure internet access as they have in school so long as they are within range of an accessible WiFi internet connection.

The district-wide one-to-one initiative is the largest of its kind in Walworth County, and gives our Delavan-Darien students a distinct advantage over students in neighboring communities by giving them the tools of tomorrow to enhance their learning today.

School districts where 1:1 initiatives have been launched have already proven the success of the program.

In 2010, proyecto RED launched a nationwide study on 1:1 schools. In studying about 1,000 schools where there was a computer for each student, the results showed students had better academic success and schools had fewer dropouts than a schools where there wasn’t 1:1.

los Uno-A-Uno Instituto also found that 1:1 programs create the opportunity for authentic personalization of teaching and learning for each student. With access to portable technologies in a wireless environment such as ours, students can learn at their own pace and ability levels while taking advantage of worldwide experiences and resources available online.

There’s also a great advantage to having a “comunidad de formación digital.” Just check out some of these stats:

  • 8 out of 10 teachers say that e-learning increases student engagement and quality of work;
  • 50% of today’s jobs require some tech skills — this is expected to grow by 77% in the next decade;
  • Using the Internet to look for a job reduces average unemployed time by 25%;
  • Más razones aquí.

We’re delighted to have this 1:1 technology available to our students as we prepare them to be 21st Century citizens and learners. Through our 1:1 initiative, we’ll succeed in our mission to provide each student a “real-world education that is engaging, though-provoking and culturally diverse.”
