The Delavan-Darien School District has a Title I Reading Support Program to assist students in acquiring strong, basic reading skills, to have a positive experience with reading and ultimately to become independent readers. Title I, as the cornerstone of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, is intended to ensure that all children, whatever their backgrounds and whatever schools they attend, can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed.
Identified students receive support to improve skills as needed in the following areas:
- Letter recognition
- Phonemic awareness
- Concepts about print
- Phonics
- Fluency
- Comprehension
- Word recognition/Vocabulary
- Written response to reading
Applying these reading strategies are most often delivered by a district reading specialist. All interventions are directed by a reading specialist, with support from the classroom teacher. The Reading Specialist is a teacher who provides direct reading instruction to eligible students in a small group setting.
Scientifically-based research is the foundation for the systematic interventions that are used. The five big ideas (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary) are integrated throughout the district's Title I Reading Support Program.
Students who may receive reading support are identified based on their performance on reading screening tests throughout their elementary school experience. Students who receive reading support qualify based on test scores, their classroom teacher's recommendation, the reading specialist's recommendation and the parent/guardian's written permission.
