This co-ed Robotics Club is open to all students at DDHS. The focus is to learn science and engineering while having fun by competing in the National USFirst Robot Competition. The club is regional in nature as it is open to home-schooled students and students from surrounding school districts, as well.
The club meets all year long, but has intensive meetings during the construction phase, which is in January and February. The club attends one or two competitive events with the robot in March and April. These events are often located out of state.
Delavan-Darien High School is one of only only a handful Wisconsin schools that offer this opportunity to students. Funding is provided by local businesses and student-directed fundraisers.
Many colleges and universities across the country offer scholarships and other financial support to science and engineering students who participated on a USFirst team while in high school.
Throughout the year, the Delavan-Darien Robotics Club follows the mission statement of USFirst:
"... to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership."
USFIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.
