The R.E.A.D.S. Program (Reading Enrichment and Developmental Success) at the Delavan-Darien School District is a one-on-one reading program that uses volunteers to mentor and assist students who need additional help in reading.
Mentors work with district students in a one-on-one capacity with a prepared lesson plan. Along the way, the mentors provide students with encouragement and reading help.
Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of one hour for one day per week, Monday through Thursday. Volunteers are welcome to work more if they choose. Schedules are arranged so that volunteers can request a time convenient for them so they are assured of working at a specific time on a regular basis. This allows mentors to fit R.E.A.D.S. into their own busy schedule. It also allows for mentors to establish a continuing relationship with the student they tutor on a one-on-one basis.
Just about anyone can be a R.E.A.D.S. mentor — parents, grandparents, senior citizens, professionals, retirees, service club or service organization members, or just someone who enjoys reading.
If you can read and follow directions, and enjoy working with children, then you are qualified to be a R.E.A.D.S. mentor. The teacher develops an easy-to-follow lesson plan for each student. Mentors are asked to carry out the lesson when they work with their student. Volunteers will be guided and given help throughout the year by the schools' R.E.A.D.S. Coordinator, who is in the classroom at all times. The district also offers a mentor training session for new mentors.
To become a R.E.A.D.S. Volunteer, contact your school's R.E.A.D.S. Coordinator by asking for them at the main office:
