Students at both Phoenix Middle School and Delavan-Darien High School can participate in the science, engineering, technology and math program known as Project Lead the Way.
According to the its website, Project Lead The Way (PLTW) prepares students to be the most innovative and productive leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and to make meaningful, pioneering contributions to our world.
PLTW partners with middle schools and high schools to provide a rigorous, relevant STEM education. Through an engaging, hands-on curriculum, PLTW encourages the development of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning.
The PLTW middle and high school STEM education programs give students a brighter future by providing them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success in STEM-related fields.
STEM education is at the heart of today's high-tech, high-skill global economy. For America to remain economically competitive, our next generation of leaders must develop the critical-reasoning and problem-solving skills that will help make them the most productive in the world. PLTW sparks the ingenuity, creativity, and innovation within all of our students.
The Delavan-Darien School District began its partnership with PLTW at the high school in the fall of 2006 through a grant received from the Kearn Foundation.
At Delavan-Darien High School, three teachers are certified to teach the courses, which include Introduction to Engineering, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics and Civil Engineering and Architecture.
In 2008, the high school program was certified by MSOE, which allows students completing these courses to earn college credit and many engineering schools throughout the country.
In the fall of 2007, the district began offering the PLTW program at Phoenix Middle School, once again with the help of a grant from the Kearn Foundation. The Gateway to Technology program at Phoenix Middle School is a project-based curriculum that prepares students for future course work at the DDHS.
