The morning Play Group is a relatively new program in the Delavan-Darien School District. It started in January 2010 as a program for children who qualify in the area of Speech and Language, and who would benefit from socialization opportunities.
Children between the ages of 3 and 5 who are not in kindergarten meet once per week (on Wednesday mornings) for 60 to 90 minutes at Turtle Creek Elementary School in a "play-based" therapy setting.
The sessions work to improve each child's speech, language and fine motor skills through various play activities and direct instruction from one of the three adults in the classroom — the district's Speech and Language Pathologist, a school psychologist and an occupational therapist. Children develop their expressive and receptive language skills (speech and listening), articulation, word finding, thought expression, comprehension, vocabulary and much more. Children will also develop their social skills and meet new friends while playing and learning with their peers.
Bus service is provided for children, both to and from play group sessions, as needed.
