Literature Circles are an approach used periodically in the intermediate grades for the purpose of helping students experience participating in literature discussion groups. Students participating in literature circles experience, share, respond and enjoy literature together.
Literature circles are formed based on book choice. Each student in the group is assigned a role to do as part of the circle. Students meet in small groups over a period of time using a role basis for discussion. Often, students in the group complete an extended response or project as a culminating activity.
The teacher's role in literature circles is to support students in the group, help provide ideas for book selections, and help students work cooperatively.
