We believe students should read independently at school and at home every day.
At school, teachers provide book talks, confer with students individually about book choices, observe students' reading behavior and keep a record of book choices to support students' independent reading.
The purpose of independent reading is to enable students to practice, practice, practice. While students are reading independently in the classroom, a teacher will often work with guided reading groups, conference with students about their reading, monitor reading of individual students and assess what materials students have chosen to read.
Through testing and monitoring throughout the year, our teachers and aides know what level student readers are, and ensure that students are reading at or above their reading levels so they are continually improve their reading skills.
