Change Possibilities

PROJECT STATUS UPDATE

Posted Friday, April 19

On Superintendent Crist's recommendation, the Board voted unanimously April 18 to NOT make any grade-level structural changes for the 2013-14 school year.

Improving or replacing the fifth-grade "portable" classrooms at Wileman will be explored, as will moving those two classrooms back to inside the brick-and-mortar building for the upcoming school year.

The board discussed possibly considering a referendum in the future to address district needs, and moving to a center school model down the road may still be considered.

For the 2013-14 school year though, all grades will be at their current school buildings.

Board President Jeff Scherer said, "We have to keep working. This is just the beginning. We have to regroup and keep moving forward."

Always ask: What's best for student achievement?

Introduction

Delavan-Darien School District staff members are committed to doing what's best for all students.

As such, district officials are considering changing the layout of its school buildings for the purposes of increasing student achievement, best utilizing district resources and implementing the many facets of the district's Strategic Plan, which is designed to bring about student and district improvement.

We recognize many of the possible changes — and that's all they are this point, possiblities — will be difficult for families to understand or accept as we first lay them out. We're using this website and the various links on it to explain the possibilities and hopefully answer your questions. If you have questions, or want to send us feedback, use the link on the right. We appreciate your questions and comments. Additionally, please come to the public information forums at the School Administration Center as you are able (schedule on right). District officials will be explaining the possibilities and answering questions and taking feedback at these meetings.

District Mission: The mission of the Delavan-Darien School District, a partnership of students, families, staff, and community, is to ensure each student is prepared to succeed and contribute as a 21st century citizen by providing a real-world education that is engaging, thought-provoking, and culturally diverse.

Call to Action:

In addition to wanting to achieve the district's mission (above), these are main reasons the district is considering these possible changes to the schooling structure:
  • Improving our students’ achievement,
  • Increasing district enrollment,
  • Maintaining a financially sound business plan for the next 3 years,
  • Assessing scale of efficiency for all resources,
  • Eliminating the portable classrooms at Wileman,
  • Addressing the “swing” boundaries for our elementary schools,
  • Providing more opportunities for advanced students,
  • Providing more options for all students through staffing assignments.

Possible Changes

  • The possible canges being considered look at maximizing the use of the existing school buildings to best meet student needs while becoming more efficient.
  • Most of the possible options looked at moving all sections of fifth grade to Phoenix Middle School. The reason for this primarily is fairness for all students in that grade. Moving just two sections of fifth graders (from Wileman's portables) to Phoenix would provide benefits to those students not shared with their classmates at Turtle Creek and Darien. There would also be drawbacks experienced by those students not experienced by their peers at other schools.
  • All possible proposals include a possible addition of 30 instructional minutes per day, per grade (K-12) (NOTE: Extension of the school day is a parallel discussion that is being analyzed as we look at changes to physical building use.)
  • Each possible proposal shows how each building would “look” as classes were housed within.
