SMART Boards are interactive learning devices that have revolutionized learning opportunities in the Delavan-Darien School District classrooms.
The boards are powered by a computer and displayed at the front of the class. Students can write on them with special electronic pens, or manipulate different parts of the board with the touch of a finger. This allows for interactive learning games to be played, math problems to be done, spelling to be checked and much more.
Teachers find the boards very useful because they can display multiple pages of notes or instructions easily, without having to erase information and start over. This has increased classroom instruction time to allow for more learning.
The students love the boards because they're easy and fun to use. Teachers who have them in their classrooms report seeing more engagement and more involvement from students, especially those who in the past have been reluctant to raise their hands.
The district has SMART Boards in all fourth and fifth grade classrooms, in all math classrooms at Phoenix Middle School and in several math classrooms at Delavan-Darien High School. There are more than 20 in use in the district with plans to add more in the future.
