Elementary Music Program
The Delavan-Darien School District elementary music program is committed to nurturing and developing the musical abilities of each participating student through the use of challenging and enjoyable experiences in music.
Music classes
Starting in kindergarten, elementary school students begin regularly scheduled music classes with one of our licensed music teachers. The students begin with such things as rhythm and beat, instrument identification, singing, dancing and music listening skills. Songs that are introduced are grade-level specific and progress in difficulty as students get older. Students develop musical skills as well as sharpen literacy and mathematical skills in music class. Many of the musical selections are chosen by virtue of their content and our music teachers are purposeful in teaching life lessons along with music lessons.
Students are invited to take additional instrumental music lessons in the fourth grade, selecting from string instruments, and adding band instruments in fifth grade (see below). Each school also has a variety of concert offerings throughout the school year, which allow our students to progress in their performance skills and concert etiquette.
Orchestra & Band Program Description
Darien, Turtle Creek, and Wileman Elementary schools offer their students the opportunity to begin learning an orchestra or band instrument. Students in fourth grade may choose between violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students in fifth grade will continue study of the stringed instruments that they began in fourth grade and work toward further refinement of their musical skills.
Students in fifth grade that did not play violin, viola, cello or bass during the previous year have the opportunity to learn a band instrument, and can choose between flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, or percussion. Following fifth grade, instrument study continues in middle school for both orchestra and band students.
