There is a new form of influenza in our community and in the world – H1N1 Flu (which has been called Swine Flu). School personnel are seeing influenza-like illnesses in all of the school buildings. The H1N1 Flu can be easily spread from person-to-person. In order to keep the school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season, we need your help. School personnel are taking the following steps to reduce the spread of this type of influenza in the Delavan-Darien schools:
Students are being monitored for influenza-like symptoms throughout the school day.
Students with symptoms are being separated from peers and being sent home.
Students and staff with influenza-like symptoms are excluded from school for a minimum of 24 hours, or until they are fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications.
The Delavan-Darien School District and the Walworth County Health Department are working closely together to monitor influenza-like illnesses and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning schools.
Here are few things you can to help:
Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any child who is determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
Keep your child home for at least 24 hours after he/she no longer has a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. Keeping ill children at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
Teach your child to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
Know the symptoms of the flu. These include fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling tired. Some people may also have vomiting or diarrhea with the flu.
If you call your child in sick for school and he/she has signs of the flu, please inform the secretary.
